Have you been thinking about starting your own business but not really sure on what steps to take? I was in your shoes once before and I didn’t really know where to start either. The things I knew for sure was that I wanted an online business, that had complete schedule flexibility, with unlimited income options. I knew that getting a second job, for me, wasn’t an option any longer and starting a Home Based Business made the most sense for what I was looking for. As a result, I’ve now been in this industry for over six years. In today’s post, I’ll be showing you How to Start A Home Based Business in 8 Steps.

1. Evaluate Your Skills

The first thing you’ll want to do is think about your skills. Skills can be broken down into soft skills versus hard skills. For example, soft skills are traits that make you good at what you do. Things like communication, team building, problem solving, etc. On the other hand, hard skills are the abilities required for you to perform your job. These are the things employers are looking for when they interview you. Things like your degrees, graphic or web design skills, computer programming, coding, and more. So take some time and think about your soft and hard skills.

What are some of the things you are able to do with ease? Do you have strong leadership skills? What about time or project management? Is decision making a skill you have? How about process improvement? Are you an effective communicator? The goal here is for you to brainstorm these things and write them down. As a result, this will help you make the connection of what type of business you may want to start, based off your skills.

2. Research Companies

There are literally thousands of companies you can get started with, however, they are not created equal. The key thing is for you to do your research and know the types of companies available. Some of the things you’ll want to look at with each company are:

– How long has the company the opportunity is with been around?

– What is the company leadership like?

– What type of compensation structure do they have?

– What type of success has the company had?

– What kind of training and support is available?

– What are their rules for advertising or promotion?

– What products or services do they offer?

– Are there any monthly quota requirements?

– What type of financial investment do you need to make to get started?

– What is the realistic income potential?

Answering these questions will help you sort out which companies you may want to pursue. Above all, they will help you understand if this business model is right for you or not. I will caution you though, don’t get so caught up in doing your research that you keep yourself from moving forward in starting your business.

3. Write Out Your Goals

You may have several different reasons why you want to start a Home Based Business. It may be finances, freedom, personal development, or your desire to spend more time with your family. Whatever the case, write your goals down so you can understand “why” you want to do it in the first place. Having a strong enough “why” will be exactly what you need to not only start your business, but to keep running your business when it isn’t always easy.

4. Review Your Finances

This will be important because you will need to make sure you have the money you’ll need to get started. For example, you can start a Home Based Business for $1000 or less in many cases. After you get started, you’ll want to make sure you’ll have whatever money you need to run your business every month. Most companies have an upfront investment cost, and a monthly fee that must be paid. Paying these fees shows the IRS that you are in business and in pursuit of a profit.

5. Review Your Availability

Knowing how much time you can commit to working a business is another important point. Before you start a Home Based Business, you will want to give this some serious thought. Are you already working multiple jobs? What about your family life? Are you married, a parent, or very involved in other things outside the home. You will want to consider these things when you’re thinking about your availability. Once you decide on your availability, you can then create a schedule that you will work your business. Most importantly, these can be defined as your business hours.

6.  Decide On A Company

Since you’ve already gathered your research of the different companies you’re interested in, you can now decide which one is the best fit for you. Carefully considering the questions in step 2 above is what will help you decide. If you come up with more than one company you’re interested in, create a list of deal makers and deal breakers. Then, see which company has a majority of your deal makers.

7. Launch Your Business

This is a big deal! You’ve done your research, you’ve got your investment money ready, and you’ve decided on a company. You’re now ready to start a Home Based Business. Once you get started, it will be time to launch and let the world know you’re in business. This is the time you’ll want to introduce your business to your friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and anyone else you encounter. Whatever you do, don’t keep your business to yourself! Remember, you’re in pursuit of a profit and if no one knows your business exists, then you’re not going to earn any type of profit.

8. Grow Your Business

Now that you’re official and open for business, this is the time to lay out your business plans, if you haven’t already. You’ll want to set your business goals, your mission, and work on your ongoing business brand. Set your business up on whatever social media platform your customers will be using. Create your website, if the company you’re in business with doesn’t already have a website available for you to use. Starting a business is just the beginning, however, if you do it right and with a plan, then your business will be off to a good start. Building and growing your business will take time, patience, effort, and most importantly consistency!
