Without knowing how to develop your social media strategy, as a Solopreneur, you won’t be able to 1) Grow your audience, 2) Increase your brand awareness, nor 3) Increase your engagement.

You’re in the right place! I created this proven, 4-step social media strategy for Solopreneurs, to help you grow your reach based on my research and experience over the past 8+ years.

But first, what is a solopreneur?

As defined by Merriam-Webster a solopreneur is one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise without the help of a partner a solo entrepreneur.

Merriam-Webster

In this post, we’ll cover everything, from understanding which social media platform you should focus on, to why knowing your numbers is critical. I’ll also give you some things to look out for along the way, mistakes I made before I worked out this system, and ones I still see other solopreneurs making.

Just follow the steps, and by the time you finish Step 4, you’ll feel like a pro and enjoy a well thought out social media strategy for solopreneurs, and a better way to increase your brand awareness and audience engagement.

Ready? Let’s go!

Step #1 – Choose One Social Media Platform

The first question you want to ask yourself is, “which platform do my clients/customers hang out on the most?” If it’s Instagram, that’s the platform you will want to hang out on too. However, if it’s Facebook, spend your time there instead.

Before you can lay out a plan to achieve your goals for your chosen platform, you’ll want to take your time with this critical first step.

So, the first thing you need to do is:

  • Figure out where your clients/customers hang out by narrowing down their interests, pain points, and desires.

For example:

Consider some of the following when thinking about your social media strategy for solopreneurs.

  • List some of the things your potential client/customer is interested in.
  • What are their hobbies?
  • What do they do for a living?
  • Are they married, single, or a parent?
  • What are some of the things keeping them up at night? These are also known as some of their pain points.
  • How can your business or product solve a problem for them?

Unlocking answers to some of these questions will help you better understand where they may be hanging out online.

In the image below you will find a data comparison gathered from Sprout Social for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as it relates to data and percentage of users for each platform.

What to look out for:

Many people skip this foundational step and then wonder why they’re not able to reach their target community on social media. Don’t let that be you!

This is a crucial foundational step that will set you up for success later on. And each step is a building block for the next, so don’t even try to jump ahead! 🙂

All done with deciding on your one platform you’re going to use? Fabulous! Let’s move on to Step 2.

Step #2 – Decide On Your Goals For That One Social Media Platform

At this point, you’re probably thinking that this is the most challenging part of the entire process.

You may even be wondering, “How do I even know what my goals should be for my chosen platform?”

If you hang in there, it will be clear, promise. What we’re doing is pulling this all together into a clear roadmap for your social media strategy for solopreneurs.

One thing that may help is to write it all down.

Now it’s time to:

  • Think about what goal would make the biggest impact for you or your business right now.

For example:

Is it to spread awareness of your brand on social media? Maybe you want to gain more followers that your business can help.

If you’re just getting started with your social media page, your goal might be to find the right people for you to follow or engage with. You can do this by reviewing your page analytics but we will talk more in detail about your analytics later on.

The point is, you want to drill down on the main reasons you’re using social media for your business in the first place.

You may even want to have a better understanding on how to be an effective Solopreneur.

As you work to understand how you can set (and achieve) your social media goals, keep in mind the data below from Sprout Social, which shows that there may be several different goals you are aiming for. They have broken down the social marketer’s top goals for social media.

The reason this step is important is that it will help you understand your top 3 goals that will have the most impact on your business and make it easier to identify the right action steps you need to take to track each goal.

Plus, you’ll have a system for tracking and achieving your goals that will keep your social media strategy moving in the right direction.

Here are some tips to help you move through this step quickly:

  • #1 – Identify your most important goal.
  • #2 – Identify the main reason you are using your chosen social media platform.
  • #3 – Answer the questions related to your target audience that was addressed earlier in this post. This will help you understand how you can best help your ideal client/customer.

What to look out for:

When I first started trying to complete this process, I tried to use multiple platforms at once with no clear direction for any of them. I wasn’t clear on my goals and I hadn’t done enough research on my target client.

I’ve also had the opportunity to peek under the hood at other people’s businesses. And in the process, I’ve seen common mistakes people make that hold them back from growing their business.

Many of the common mistakes relate to this step:

  • #1 [Not having a plan for your business]  – instead of doing it the “wrong way”,  you should write out your goals, and your plan to reach each goal.
  • #2 [Not understanding your audience] – you’ll get better results if you do your research so you can know exactly how to reach your audience.
  • #3 [Using multiple platforms without any success on at least one of them] – if you find it hard to use one platform before moving on to multiple platforms, try alternating platforms each week.

Just keep focusing on what works best for you and you’ll be on the right track.

Step #3 – Develop A Strategy

Are you starting to get excited? I hope so. We’re just about there.

You may be feeling a bit overwhelmed and that’s perfectly normal. Any time you’re trying something new, it takes a minute to process it. Just be patient and stay with it.

Next, develop a strategy to achieve your social media goals, as a solopreneur.

While you’re doing this, make a note of the metrics you want to track (i.e follower count, engagement percentage, page growth, etc). This is important because once you know which metrics you want to track, you can begin checking them on a regular basis. Tracking each metric will show you what’s working and where you need to adjust.

Make any adjustments you need to make before you move on.

For example:

In order for me to really understand how I could increase my engagement percentage, especially as a solopreneur, I had to pay closer attention to the types of posts I was making.

So before each post, the first question I always ask myself is, “is this post helpful and relatable for my audience?” If the answer is yes to both, then it gets posted.

What to look out for:

It may be hard to zero in on which goals may be best for you to focus on at this stage of your business, as a solopreneur.

What you can do is:

  • Always think of how your goals align with your audience.
  • Remember your audience’s pain points and how your business can help solve them.

Step #4 – Study Your Numbers

We’re just about done. This is the last step.  Get ready to celebrate!

Here’s what to do next:

  • Make sure your social media page is set up as a business profile and not a personal profile.
  • Research your page analytics. (This can only be done if your profile is set up as a business profile).

Below you will see a screenshot of some of my Instagram and Facebook follower analytics. Knowing these numbers helps me understand the age and gender demographics of my followers on each platform.

I can also see my top cities and countries that my followers live in as well as the most active days and times (by the hour) they are online.

As a solopreneur, knowing this information not only helps me understand what to post, but also when to post, for the most engagement.

What to look out for:

No matter what you do, don’t rush through the draft stage.

If you do, you’ll only risk the growth of your business and your audience. So just focus on studying your analytics, mapping out your goals, and make adjustments where necessary.

As the saying goes, “Content builds relationships. Relationships are built on trust. Trust drives revenue.”
