So you have a side business but you aren’t quite sure how to rock it out with positive results. You may have launched your business with no clear direction on how you wanted to achieve those results. There are some foundational things that must take place to not only sustain your business, but to also grow it. In this post, I share 4 ways to rock your side business so you can see it grow to what you desire.
1. LAY OUT YOUR BUSINESS GOALS
Having a mental goal is never enough, no matter what the goal is for. Whether it be business, personal, professional, etc., you must write your goals down so you can track your progress. Doing so, will provide you with a tangible way to measure the work you do toward the completion of your goals. When you are building a business, it’s very important to write down and track your goals. You want to be able to measure the success of your business and developing S.M.A.R.T goals will help you do so. S.M.A.R.T. goals mean your goals are developed using the following criteria:
- Specific – Is the goal specific?
- Measurable – Is the goal measurable?
- Attainable – Is the goal attainable?
- Realistic – Is the goal realistic?
- Timely – Does the goal have a date?
You need to know if your business actions are helping you move closer to your overall business goals or if they are slowing the growth of your business. Measuring those moves will help you when it’s time to make business decisions. There is nothing more rewarding than laying out a business goal and watching it take place.
2. KNOW YOUR TARGET MARKET
Who is your customer? How can your business help solve a problem they have? What is their background? What makes your product/service stand out for your customer? These are questions you need to answer for your business. Knowing these answers will help you define who your business is for. If you want to market your business successfully, you must understand your customer because everyone can’t be your customer. Doing the necessary research to decide who your business is for will save you the hassle of trying to figure out how to reach them.
3. HAVE A WEBSITE
Your website will be the home for your business and is the neighborhood for your brand. This is where you can showcase the products and services your business has to offer. This also gives your customers the opportunity to get to know you and your business even more. The key to building any business is authenticity and the more your customers get to know the real you and the vision for your business, the greater your chances are of cultivating the perfect tribe for your business. If social media were to disappear, will you have a way to stay in touch with your customers? That’s where your website comes in, because you will be in control of that regardless of social media’s existence.
4. BRAND YOUR BUSINESS
Your brand for your business is its’ voice and message to the world. Launching a business goes beyond having a catchy name or logo. Your business brand should be constructed with your customer in mind. Things to be considered beyond the logo are your brands’ colors, it’s message, and the typography to be used, just to name a few. The biggest key here is consistency regardless of where your business shows up, be it online or offline. Your brand must maintain consistency wherever your customer encounters it.
